Faith in the Unfinished Road: Keep Building Who You Are Becoming

Keep building isn’t just a tagline for MySelf Builder. It’s a way of moving through the world. It represents striving, stretching, and stepping into what feels uncertain until it becomes possible.

Imagine driving across a bridge and suddenly realizing the path ahead looks incomplete. Most people would slow down, stop, or turn around.

But then you hear a voice that says:

“Keep driving, even if you can’t see the road yet. Move forward, and the path will appear beneath you.”

That’s the philosophy that has shaped my educational journey. Hebrews 11:1 reads,

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

That scripture carried me through Elon as a first‑generation, spring‑admitted student working two campus jobs, navigating challenges, strengthening my faith, and discovering my purpose in serving students. It guided me through a master’s program in the middle of a pandemic, when the future felt unpredictable.

And it’s the same belief that fuels my pursuit of a doctorate at UNC Chapel Hill.

Time and time again, I’ve learned that when the odds feel low, or when the road ahead looks unclear, the most important thing you can do is keep moving forward.

There is always room to build, learn, and grow.

Recently, an assignment challenged me to think about how I show up in different spaces. In my qualitative methods course, we’ve been exploring research subjectivity - how our backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences shape the way we study and serve others.

We were asked to create a paper doll of ourselves and layer it with versions of who we are at home, with family and friends, professionally, and beyond.

In my reflection paper, I wrote:

“One challenge was seeing how each new layer covered parts of the previous one. As I added clothing, props, and responsibilities, some of my interests and hobbies became less visible. It was eye‑opening to recognize that many aspects of who I am can remain hidden unless I intentionally share them with others.”

That exercise reminded me why I began working in education in the first place:

  • To help individuals become the best version of themselves.

  • To help people recognize that different versions of who we are may show up depending on where we are and who we’re around.

  • And to encourage others to uncover their authentic, true selves…not the version shaped by expectations, assumptions, or fear.

As A.I. continues to reshape how we learn, communicate, and build systems, it’s becoming even more important to understand who we are as humans: our talents, our abilities, our stories, and our unique identities.

So if you’re unsure about your next step, undecided, overwhelmed, or questioning your direction, or if the road ahead looks unfinished…

Remember to be true to yourself, have faith, take chances, work hard, and never stop building.
